Biography on Sir John Franklin - 1041 Words

Sir John Franklin was born Spilsby, Lincolnshire on April 16, 1786. Sir John Franklin’s parents, Willingham Franklin and his wife Hannah Weekes had twelve children. Sir John Franklin was fascinated with the sea however his father opposed it but Franklin’s desire kept him determined. Franklin finally got his father to allow him to go on a trail voyage at a young age. At fourteen, Franklin set out on his first ship. Once returning, Franklin was more than determined now that his life would be on the sea. With this, his father secured him a Royal Navy appointment. Later Franklin was present on some historic voyages and naval battles. Some of the battles in which Franklin was present includes the Battle of Copenhagen, the Battle of Trafalgar, and the Battle of New Orleans. Between 1819 and 1822, Franklin lost eleven of his men on a voyage. Reports of starvation, murder and even suggestions of cannibalism. The survivors of the crew would eat anything even their leather boots just to stay alive. This is how Sir John Franklin received his nickname â€Å" the man who ate his own boots†. Page 2 After returning home for a little while, he met his wife and married Eleanor Anne Porden in 1823. She was a poet. They had one daughter together a year later and named her Eleanor too. His wife became ill and died in 1825 from tuberculosis. Before her death, Eleanor made Franklin promise that he would get back on the sea for what he loved.
